For the Champ Car race at Laguna Seca in 2000, Montoya wore a special tribute helmet to his friend Gonzalo Rodriguez, who was killed in the previous years race.

The design was a combination of the normal Montoya style with some of the features and colours from the helmet design of his friend and the Speedy cartoon is a reference to his nickname.
